Case Study: Murals + Venetian Plaster = A Match Made in Heaven

Collaboration That Inspired Excellence

In the world of high-quality decorative finishes, craftsmanship is everything. When Hattas Studios was asked to paint cherubs over a Venetian plastered ceiling, we said "yes please!" This chance for collaboration was too good to miss.

Set in a primary bedroom, this dome ceiling aimed to evoke themes of love and marriage. This dreamlike vision required the perfect synergy between artistry and texture.

The Canvas: Venetian Plaster’s Timeless Elegance

The foundation of this decorative arts collaboration was meticulously applied by Hoppe Brothers and Sons. HBS is an interior/exterior painting company renowned for its mastery in contemporary and Old-World surface techniques. Their velvety smooth plaster created the perfect backdrop for a ceiling mural that needed depth, movement and warmth.

Venetian plaster on its own is a showstopper. But paired with a hand-painted mural, it becomes something even more extraordinary. Instead of painting on a flat white ceiling, the mural feels like it has lived on the ceiling for centuries.

The Artistry: Cherubs of Love & Marriage

Once the Venetian plaster dried, Hattas Studios began their careful work. They focused on bringing the client's vision to life.

Inspired by classical European frescoes, we painted the cherubs (or putti) in soft, ethereal tones. These faded hues blended seamlessly with the warmth of the plaster. Each brushstroke ensured the figures felt as though they were emerging from the ceiling itself.

The result? A romantic, sophisticated statement piece that celebrates the client’s love story, while also creating a stunning space.

The Client’s Reaction: A Dream Realized

The homeowner was speechless upon seeing the final piece. The fusion of soft texture with delicate cherubs created an ambiance of warmth, intimacy and grandeur all at once. What could have been a simple mural or a standard faux finish instead became an immersive experience. Walking in the room is like stepping into a private Venetian villa.

Why Faux Finishers Should Partner with a Muralist

This project is one example of how faux finishing and hand-painted murals can enhance and complement each other. Venetian plaster provides an unmatched sense of depth and luxury. But when paired with custom artwork, it tells a story—a story of craftsmanship, sophistication and personal expression.

Faux finishers looking to do even more with custom walls, should collaborate with a skilled muralist. This partnership can elevate both of their works to new levels of art, enhancing a room's interior design.

Consider areas in a home where a wall or ceiling could be take one step further to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Consider adding a custom-art focal point in a living rooms and dining rooms. Your clients will thank you for your innovation and out-of-the box thinking ... giving them an added wow-factor they can cherish forever.

In the same house as the putti dome, HBS also applied plaster to the foyer. The foyer dome ceiling was another opportunity for a wow-factor within the beautifully plastered walls.
