How to Design a Custom Mural That Reflects Your Personal Story

A beautiful room can impress you. A luxurious room can elevate you. But the spaces that truly stay with you, often have something deeper woven into them: a story.

When custom art or murals reflect the personal history, memories and identity of the homeowner, the space becomes more than just well-designed. It becomes authentic. It becomes a place that resonates emotionally every time you enter the room.

At Hattas Studios, this belief guides much of our work. Custom art is most powerful when it’s rooted in the life, imagination and experiences of the people who will live with it.

Why Personal Stories Elevate Custom Art

Luxury design is about individuality. A truly high-end interior should feel unique to the people who inhabit it. Custom murals and artwork offer an extraordinary opportunity to weave personal meaning directly into the architecture of a home.

When artwork reflects a homeowner’s story, it adds layers of depth that can’t be replicated with off-the-shelf decor.

A mural might reference:

• childhood memories
• cultural heritage
• favorite landscapes
• meaningful symbols
• family traditions
• moments of adventure or discovery

These elements transform art from decoration into a meaningful visual narrative.

Instead of simply filling a wall, the artwork begins to say something about who lives there.

Finding Inspiration in Your Own Story

Many people assume they need a dramatic life story to inspire custom artwork. In reality, inspiration often comes from the small, meaningful details of everyday life.

If you’re thinking about commissioning a mural or custom piece, start by asking yourself a few simple questions:

What places make you feel most at peace?
What landscapes or environments inspire you?
What childhood memories still feel vivid today?
What cultures, travels, or traditions are meaningful to you?
What activities make you feel most alive?

The answers might reveal unexpected inspiration. A love of the ocean, a childhood spent exploring forests, summers in Tuscany, family gardens, favorite books, or beloved animals can all become visual themes within a piece of art.

These ideas provide a starting point for transforming personal experiences into imagery.

Using Symbolism Instead of Literal Storytelling

One of the most elegant ways to incorporate personal stories into art is through symbolism.

Rather than illustrating a memory exactly as it happened, artists can use imagery that hints at the story in a more poetic way.

This homeowner loves hiking. Working with our client’s photos, we were able to design and paint a mural that was truly inspired by her own experiences. Mural by Hattas Studios.

For example:

• A winding forest path might represent adventure and discovery.
• Birds in flight might symbolize freedom or travel.
• Lanterns might represent curiosity and exploration.
• Flowers from a childhood garden might evoke family memories.

Symbolic imagery allows a mural to feel layered and sophisticated rather than overly literal. Guests may simply experience the beauty of the artwork, while the homeowner understands the deeper meaning embedded within it. Since art is a great conversation-starter, sharing stories about the symbolism in your artwork is a great way to share your story and connect with friends.

A Case Study: The Enchanted Forest at Pasadena Showcase

A perfect example of personal storytelling in art is our room at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design 2026.

For this project, we transformed an ordinary upstairs hall closet into an immersive environment we call “The Enchanted Nook”—a magical forest where visitors can step inside and feel transported into a storybook world.

The walls became a hand-painted woodland landscape filled with twisting trees, soft light, hidden details, and scenes inspired by beloved fairy tales.

But the inspiration for the room wasn’t just aesthetic. It was deeply personal.

Growing up, our father loved reading stories to us. Fairy tales filled our childhood with imagination, adventure, and beautiful illustrations that sparked our love of art. At the same time, we spent hours playing outside in the woods—exploring, inventing stories, and letting our imaginations run wild.

The enchanted forest mural was a reflection of those memories.

When we step into that room, it brings us back to that childlike feeling of discovery, the sense that anything might be waiting just beyond the trees. It’s playful. It’s imaginative. And for us, it’s personal. That emotional connection is what gives the space its magic.

Designing Art That Feels Meaningful

The beauty of custom art is that every homeowner can create a story that belongs uniquely to them.

Imagine what your own story might look like on a wall.

An elegant dining room complete with a grisaille landscape mural. The mural includes specific places from the homeowners’ travels in Italy.

Perhaps it’s a mural inspired by a place you love—rolling hills from a favorite vineyard, the coastline from a memorable trip, or a garden that reminds you of childhood.

Maybe it’s symbolic imagery that reflects your heritage, passions or the things that bring you joy.

Or perhaps it’s an imaginative environment that evokes a feeling you want to experience in a space—calm, adventure, nostalgia, or wonder.

Custom art allows you to design not just what a room looks like, but how it feels.

Where Could Your Story Live?

Murals and custom artwork don’t need to dominate a room to be impactful. Some of the most magical spaces are small, unexpected places.

Consider where storytelling artwork could live within your home:

This homeowner’s love for train sets lead to a stunning backdrop mural of a mountain town. The scene is filled with 30 Easter eggs, including the church where the couple got married, his soccer team from college, and his first business venture. This mural is a culmination of his colorful life.

• an entryway that introduces your home’s personality
• a dining room that celebrates travel and culture
• a child’s room filled with imagination and wonder
• a reading nook or library inspired by favorite stories
• a hallway that unfolds like a visual journey

Even a closet, like our Pasadena Showcase space, can become something extraordinary.

Turning Walls Into Stories

Great design should feel intentional, layered, and meaningful. Custom murals offer a rare opportunity to turn blank walls into reflections of life experiences, memories and imagination.

When art tells a story, it becomes more than decoration. It becomes part of the identity of the home.

So if you were to create a piece of art that tells your story, what would it look like?

Where would it live in your home?

And what memories, symbols, or adventures would you weave into it?

Because the most beautiful murals don’t just transform a room. They reveal the story of the people who live there.
